Who We Are

Greater Orlando Council of the Blind (GOCB) is the Orlando area chapter of the Florida Council of the Blind (FCB), an organization that is itself an affiliate of the American Council of the Blind (ACB). Our chapter serves the Orange, Seminole and Osceola Counties in the Central Florida area.

ACB is the nation's leading membership organization of blind and visually impaired people. It was founded in 1961 and incorporated in the District of Columbia.

The Council strives to improve the well-being of all blind and visually impaired people by: elevating the social, economic and cultural levels of blind persons; cooperating with the public and private institutions and organizations concerned with blind services; encouraging and assisting all blind persons to develop their abilities and conducting a public education program to promote greater understanding of blindness and the capabilities of blind people.

Meetings

Greater Orlando Council of the Blind holds General Meetings usually on the first Saturday of the month at 10:00 AM. These meetings are held virtually on Zoom. Guest speakers are usually scheduled for every meeting.

During the month of September, the General Meeting may take place on the second Saturday of the month. This is because of the Labor Day Weekend falling on the first Saturday in September. GOCB Meetings are not held in July or August as the organization takes a break for the summer.

Members are encouraged to attend the meetings in order to participate in discussions and to have an idea of what GOCB is doing and what it wants to do for the local blind and visually impaired community. In addition, GOCB usually holds Annual Luncheons in June for presenting local awards, including the Rotter-Lamb Memorial Scholarship for a deserving student going to college in Central Florida, and in December to celebrate the holidays.
