GREATER ORLANDO COUNCIL OF THE BLIND

Greater Orlando Council of the Blind (GOCB) is the Orlando area chapter of the Florida Council of the Blind (FCB), an organization that is itself an affiliate of the American Council of the Blind (ACB). ACB is the nation's leading membership organization of blind and visually impaired people. It was founded in 1961 and incorporated in the District of Columbia.

The Council strives to improve the well-being of all blind and visually impaired people by: elevating the social, economic and cultural levels of blind persons; cooperating with the public and private institutions and organizations concerned with blind services; encouraging and assisting all blind persons to develop their abilities and conducting a public education program to promote greater understanding of blindness and the capabilities of blind people.

GOCB has its By-Laws available for review. We are very proud of this accomplishment. So please continue to check out information below.

MEMBERSHIP AND BENEFITS

Donations are gladly accepted at any time; however, we encourage as many people as possible to be a part of Greater Orlando Council of the Blind as a member. Membership for GOCB is $12.00 annually. Renewals are usually accepted between August and October. Dues must be paid by November 15. That $12.00 membership also comes with the option to receive the following publications:

WHITE CANE BULLETIN - the FCB newsletter published bi-monthly. This is available in print, cassette and braille format. If you provide an e-mail address, you can also receive it by e-mail. White Cane Bulletin is also posted on the FCB website after its initial mailings. The White Cane Bulletin Page

BRAILLE FORUM - the ACB newsletter published monthly. This is available in large print, cassette, braille and by e-mail. Similar to White Cane, Braille Forum is posted on the ACB website for future reference. The ACB Braille Forum Page

Greater Orlando Council of the Blind produced a Newsletter for many years when our chapter was called Mid-Florida Council of the Blind but that Newsletter that is no longer being published. There are archives at the link below of issues from September 2003 through the final issue, which was published for March-April 2009. Please enjoy reading these issues produced previously by our chapter. GOCB Newsletters Page

The $12.00 dews helps to provide activities for members locally as well as assisting those in attending annual conventions and board meetings with FCB.

MEETINGS

Greater Orlando Council of the Blind holds General Meetings usually on the first Saturday of the month at 12:00 PM. These meetings are in the Meeting Room at William Booth Towers, 633 Lake Dot Circle, Orlando, FL 32801. Booth Towers is just off Colonial Drive in downtown Orlando. Guest speakers are usually scheduled for every meeting. Refreshments are served during the meeting and door prizes are usually given out as well.

During the months of March and September, the General Meetings may take place on the second Saturday of the month. This is because many GOCB Members participate in annual fundraisers that may take place during the first Saturday in March and Labor Day Weekend falling on the first Saturday in September. GOCB Meetings are not held in July or August as the organization takes a break for the summer.

Members are encouraged to attend the meetings in order to participate in discussions and to have an idea of what GOCB is doing and what it wants to do for the local blind and visually impaired community.

In addition, GOCB usually holds Annual Luncheons in June for presenting local awards, including the Rotter-Lamb Memorial Scholarship for a deserving student going to college in Central Florida, and in December to celebrate the holidays.
