BIRTHDAY PEOPLE
Hi All. I hope all of you are having a great 2004 so far. We’re looking forward to the same with MFCB this year as well.
It’s a special year for Mid-Florida Council of the Blind. This is the thirtieth anniversary of our local organization. While we keep looking to
the next thirty years, at our next General Meeting, we’ll also take a look at how our organization was created, where we’ve been, and what
it took to gain equal access to so many of the things we now take for granted. Jim Lamb has been with MFCB all along and will share
with us some of his best insight into the organization, along with some great stories too.
I hope many of you can attend. See you there.

The next General Meeting of MFCB will be at Booth Towers, 633 Lake Dot Circle, Orlando, FL, 32801, on Saturday, February 7th, 2004,
from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. It is highly recommended that if anyone uses paratransit, please plan your rides accordingly.
President Rachel Bader will call a Board Meeting at 12:30 PM.
Longtime Mid-Florida Council of the Blind Member Jim Lamb is going to speak on some of the history of MFCB as well as FCB, the
Florida Council of the Blind. This was originally scheduled for the January General Meeting but due to unforeseen circumstances, it did
not take place and has been rescheduled for this upcoming General Meeting.

21 members were present at the January 3rd General Meeting at Booth Towers in Orlando. President Rachel Bader began the Meeting
by reading a letter from member Rebecca Letzkus, who also is a representative for ABE (Adult Basic Education), who received the
MFCB Love Offering that was raised at the December Holiday Luncheon. In her letter, Rebecca thanked MFCB for this gift, which was in
the amount of $63.00. (As was mentioned in the January 2004 MID-FLORIDA VOICE, ABE is an organization committed to helping the
visually-impaired better themselves.)
After the Secretary’s and Treasurer’s Reports were read and approved, and the reminder was made for any members who have not
already paid their Membership dues to do so by January 7th, Nicole Hugues gave the Transportation Committee report as Chuck Graham
was unable to attend the General Meeting. At the TD (Transportation Disadvantaged) Commission Meeting on December 19th, 2003, it
was announced that the leader of the TD Commission was fired and there was a possibility of suspending the Commission. (At the time
of this issue, the TD Commission has not been suspended.)
Nicole also announced that Lynx now has a Braille printer, thanks to MV Transportation. She made a motion that MFCB send a “Thank
You” letter to MV for this purchase, with Nicole writing the letter. The motion was approved.
Committees were also selected for 2004. Before the General Meeting, the Board decided that there would be a few changes to the
Committees. The following separate Committees would be combined:
Awards & Scholarship
Correspondence, Newsletter and Publicity would now be Publicity & Publications
Education and Public Education would now be only Public Education
Also, the following new Committees would be formed:
By-Laws
Door Prizes
And the Telephone Committee would join with Membership to become the Membership & Telephone Committee.
Due to many members not able to attend due to the Holidays, there are some Committees that have not been finalized. The final list of
MFCB Committees and its members will be noted in the March 2004 issue of THE MID-FLORIDA VOICE.
Leslie Spoone asked if we should consider holding the Annual December Holiday Luncheon at Booth Towers and make it a party. The
reason she suggested this is that the attendance for this Luncheon compared to the June Awards Luncheon is much lower. She added
that it does not need to be decided at the moment but it should be something to consider later in the year.
The January fundraiser was an Orlando Magic T-Shirt and Tickets package, which raised $35.00. Pat Spoone originally won the package
but only kept the T-Shirt. After the tickets were re-drawn, Scott Larson won both sets of tickets, which were for the January 31st game
versus the Los Angeles Clippers and the February 6th game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
The following Door Prizes were given out:
1st Prize – loaf of Italian Bread – Bill Freeman
2nd Prize – small loaf of Pumpernickel Bread – Elizabeth Bouyer
3rd Prize – 4-pack of Elephant Ears Bread – Bo Justice
4th Prize – 4-pack of Elephant Ears Bread with Cinnamon – Larry Turnbull
Congratulations to all the Prize Winners!

people in the greater Orlando area who believe in what we are doing as an organization. So again, thank you all for being a part of
MFCB.
